A Google Communication Revolution?
Oct 5th, 2009 by Eileen Buleza
Last week Google released the buzzed about “Google Wave” communications platform that has been touted as a revolution to the way we communicate. (I know what you’re thinking- more change? I’m still catching up with all this new social media communications!)
Essentially Wave combines e-mail with all other social media and online communications: chat, blogs, photo/video-sharing and user-generated documents. Google is referring to this new communications as a “hosted conversation,” or “wave.”
When developing the platform, Google asked — if e-mail were created today, what would it look like? Wave is their answer to that question.
For someone who has been using social media and is comfortable in the new media world- after reviewing the demo, this platform seems somewhat daunting and chaotic. Starting last Wednesday 100,000 select individuals have been invited to test the Wave. The much-anticipated trial will undoubtedly result in some interesting feedback.
To learn about Wave, you may watch Google’s hour and a half video introduction (a demo starts around minute 6) or check out one of the many news outlets talking about the platform. Here is some information from Mashable.com.
The element of Wave I find most interesting is its focus on more collaborative and time efficient communication and its production platform. For those who work outside of a traditional office, the prospect of being able to be more connected and engaged with colleagues is exciting.
